Pokémon collectors are staring down a big date: 30th Celebration launches on September 16, 2026. That means more ripping, more singles hunting, more “should I grade this?” posts, and probably a few wallets taking super effective damage.
Before you send every shiny pull to PSA, slow down. The smartest move right now is not hype grading. It is pre-grading: checking centering, corners, edges, surface, and real comp prices before you spend money on grading fees.
Why collectors are watching this
The Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration set is built for nostalgia, and nostalgia moves cardboard. The official Pokémon product showcase says the expansion launches on September 16, 2026, with more products coming later in the year. That kind of release tends to bring back older collectors, parents, gift buyers, and sealed product hunters.
That also means condition questions get louder. A card can look “pack fresh” and still have off-centering, corner dings, print lines, edge whitening, or surface scratches. Those flaws matter a lot when you are deciding between selling raw, keeping it in a binder, or sending it out for grading.
Here is the trap: collectors often compare their raw card to a PSA 10 sale and think they found free money. Nope. You still need to account for grading fees, shipping, risk, turnaround time, and the very real chance your card comes back a 9, 8, or worse.
What this means for raw cards, slabs, and grading
For raw cards, condition is the whole game. TCGplayer uses condition buckets like Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played, and Damaged. TCGplayer also notes that Mint or Gem Mint are not marketplace condition labels. That is important because “Near Mint” does not mean “PSA 10 candidate.” It usually means the card has minimal wear, not perfection.
For slabs, the target is tighter. PSA says a Gem Mint 10 is a virtually perfect card, with sharp corners, original gloss, no staining, and centering that does not exceed about 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the back. So yes, centering can sink an otherwise clean chase card.
Before grading, check these five things:
- Centering: Look at left vs right and top vs bottom borders. If it is clearly lopsided, do not assume a 10.
- Whitening: Flip the card over and inspect the blue or black edges under good light. Tiny white dots can matter.
- Corners: Soft corners, nicks, and fraying are grade killers.
- Surface: Tilt the card under light. Print lines, dents, scratches, and roller marks can hide until you angle it.
- Value gap: Compare raw comps to graded comps. If a PSA 9 barely beats raw after fees, grading may not be worth the sweat.
For card shops, this is also an intake problem. When hype sets land, customers bring stacks of pulls and ask for fast pricing. Shops need clean condition notes, quick scans, and a repeatable way to separate binder copies from grading candidates.
